Growing up in New York, I never thought about marketing in sports. It was more of a tribal allegiance than a decision. Professional sports marketing is a multi billion dollar business, and it is growing every year. I never thought about the fact that the teams were not only fighting for victory, but also fighting for fans. Until I fell into a sports marketer position, I was pretty much oblivious to how much money changes hands behind the scenes. You always loved one and hated the other, and so did your entire family. The popularity of sports fashion, however, baffles me. Even if they don't have a lot of money, people in New York believe in looking good. It is just fine for what it is designed for. I play soccer, and I wouldn't do it without soccer shorts, cleats, and a lightweight jersey designed to wick sweat away from my skin. I wouldn't exactly say that I hate sports clothing. They were overcoats in the winter, colorful, flattering, light clothing in the summer, and comfortable, layered outfits in the fall and spring. They are nice, practical, functional clothes designed for a specific game, and I use them for that game. You see, I grew up in New York. New York is different than the rest of the country in many ways, but one of the biggest differences is in fashion sensibilities.
